North Woods Construction Ltd Profile

North Woods Construction Ltd was formed by Bernard Planterose in 1998 out of North Woods partnership which had been designing and delivering timber structures, mobile sawmilling and small scale woodland establishment in the northern Highlands since 1983. It operates out of Leckmelm Wood, near Ullapool, managing and utilizing spruce, Douglas fir and Scots pine from this 30 ha former FCS plantation. The business is founded on the use of home-grown and other responsibly sourced timber and its experience and expertise in timber sourcing and design is utilized by architects and Local Authorities. Bernard is a regular contributor to timber conferences in Scotland and a member of the Forest Policy Group.

North Woods offers a complete design and build service within Highland Scotland delivering a wide variety of timber structures and buildings. It can also provide stand-alone design of all or parts of timber buildings throughout the country. Over the years we have worked with a number of structural engineers on projects ranging from a marine landing stage to large commercial sheds and from footbridges to complete houses. We have been involved only in ecologically sensitive work since before ‘sustainability‘ became a fashion. We remain at the forefront of genuinely ecologically based construction, pioneering 100% home-grown timber buildings, timber/concrete composites and most recently the use of cross-laminated timber panels at a domestic scale.

The knowledge to tackle such structures has been won partly in the course of three EU funded research projects along with collaborations with Locate Architects, Gaia Architects and Eurban Ltd. John Sinclair of Allen Gordon Consulting Engineers has been of considerable support over the years as has Neil Sutherland with whom we have collaborated on occasions. Neil Hammond founder of Chill Winds and Windharvest is Company Secretary providing expertise in renewable energies whenever required.
